Having spent many holidays in Uruguay, we formed close friendships with local gaucho children and became deeply connected to their communities. Through these relationships, we quickly recognized the severe lack of funding in rural public schools and the everyday challenges children face simply trying to learn.

Our journey began modestly. We donated birthday vouchers to help schools purchase basic resources—starting with something as simple, yet essential, as a printer. Over time, it became clear that what these schools truly needed was something more sustainable, something that would continue to give long after a single donation was spent.

That is how Fruitful Education found its roots.

We plant mburucuya trees in the playgrounds of rural public schools, offering children access to fresh fruit—something many would not otherwise have. Beyond nourishment, these trees become living classrooms. Children learn how to care for and nurture a plant, developing responsibility, patience, and a connection to nature. The trees also provide much-needed shade during Uruguay’s intense summer heat, improving daily school life in a practical and lasting way.

During a recent summer, I spent three weeks at my family’s estancia, Los Gurises, visiting nearby rural schools to plant citrus saplings. When the children returned to school on Monday, they were welcomed by these young trees—ready to grow alongside them and begin a shared learning journey. I documented this work through photographs as a testament to our commitment and the impact of our mission.

At Fruitful Education, we believe that small, thoughtful actions can grow into meaningful, lasting change—one tree, one child, and one school at a time.
